The Kuje Magistrate Court has granted bail to Hon. Alexander Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives for Aba North and South Federal Constituency, who faces charges of assault and abuse of office. The court set his bail at N500,000, with the condition of two sureties residing within the court’s jurisdiction, who must present utility bills as proof of residence. The hearing is set to continue on Friday, November 8.
Ikwechegh, who pleaded not guilty, was arraigned on Wednesday by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on three counts: abuse of office, assault, and making threats to life. The charges follow an incident involving a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, which gained public attention after a video surfaced online showing Ikwechegh allegedly slapping and threatening the driver.
The case has drawn condemnation from civil society groups, with the Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) criticizing Ikwechegh’s actions. RULAAC’s Executive Director, Okechukwu Nwanguma, called the incident “a glaring example of abuse of power” often seen in the political landscape. He stated that the lawmaker’s actions cast a shadow not only on him but also on the House of Representatives and the Nigerian political system, highlighting the troubling trend of officials allegedly acting above the law.
In response, the House of Representatives has announced its intention to investigate the matter. RULAAC’s statement also questioned the integrity of law enforcement, stressing the need for genuine accountability and emphasizing that justice must prevail for Abuwatseya, as well as for others affected by similar abuses.
“This case must serve as a catalyst for change,” Nwanguma added, urging reforms to protect human rights and reinforce the rule of law in Nigeria.
