The Labour Party has called for the resignation of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero, suggesting he should instead vie for the chairmanship position within the party. This comes in response to a letter from the NLC Political Commission urging the suspension of the planned Labour Party convention in Umuahia, Abia State. The Commission also requested the immediate resignation of Labour Party's National Chairman, Julius Abure, proposing a caretaker transition committee to organize a legitimate and inclusive national convention.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the Labour Party reiterated its commitment to proceed with the convention, citing the party's constitution which specifies eligible participants. The statement criticized Ajaero's actions, attributing them to setbacks faced by the party.
The Labour Party emphasized the need for the NLC to respect its autonomy, highlighting the distinction between the party and the congress. The statement criticized the NLC's interference in party affairs, describing it as suffocating.
The party also criticized the NLC's past actions, accusing it of attempting to influence candidate selections in the 2023 general elections. The statement underscored the party's achievements under Abure's leadership, noting its current position as a major opposition party in Nigeria.
