Labour Party’s Leadership Crisis: NLC Slams ‘Illegal’ Re-election of Julius Abure

Julius Abure

The Labour Party's National Chairman, Julius Abure, secured re-election at a convention in Nnewi, Anambra State, amid tight security. The party also announced its plan to reserve its 2027 presidential ticket for Peter Obi and the Abia State governorship ticket for Alex Otti.

However, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) rejected the convention's outcome, calling it illegal. NLC spokesperson Benson Upah described the event as a charade and vowed not to recognize Abure as LP leader.

The convention, held at the Grand Seasons Hotel in Nnewi, had low attendance. Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu, representing Governor Otti, declared Abure the winner, with Chief Clement Ojukwu emerging as the Deputy National Chairman.

Several former NWC members were dropped due to non-performance or exceeding their term limits. The LP communique also called on President Bola Tinubu to address the country's rising insecurity and inflation, expressing optimism for the party's future.
