Lagos Approves 13% Fare Increase for BRT, Standard Bus Services

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority has announced a revised fare structure for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and standard route services following the approval of a 13 per cent increase under the state’s Bus Reform Initiative.

The new fares will take effect from Monday, March 2, 2026.

According to LAMATA, the adjustment was approved after regulated public transport operators raised concerns about rising operational costs amid prevailing economic pressures. The agency said the review is aimed at ensuring the sustainability of public transportation services across Lagos.

In a statement by its Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, LAMATA explained that the decision aligns with the state’s annual fare review mechanism.

“The adjustment is designed to help offset the severe impact of ongoing economic pressures on public transport providers,” the statement noted.

The agency referenced recent data from the National Bureau of Statistics, which showed that Nigeria’s headline inflation rate stood at 15.15 per cent in December 2025, moderating slightly to about 15.1 per cent in January 2026. These inflationary levels, LAMATA said, continue to place heavy strain on transport operators’ costs, including fuel, maintenance, and vehicle parts.
