The Lagos State Government has directed communities operating gated streets to keep them open daily from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. throughout the festive season to reduce traffic congestion across the state.
The government also warned owners of gates and other structures erected on public roads without approval from the Ministry of Transportation to remove them within seven days.
This directive was announced in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi. According to the statement, the move aligns with existing state guidelines and supports the THEMES+ Agenda of the current administration, which focuses on smooth traffic flow, safety of lives and property, and ease of doing business in Lagos.
While recognising the security benefits of gated streets, the ministry stressed the importance of keeping roads accessible, especially as traffic volume increases during the festive period due to travel, commercial activities, tourism and entertainment.

The state government assured residents that enforcement measures would be put in place to ensure free movement in and out of gated streets, with the aim of preventing gridlock and protecting lives and property.
It added that the government remains committed to making movement around the state convenient and safe for residents and visitors during the festive season and beyond, noting that similar measures have been implemented in previous years to manage Yuletide traffic.
