Lagos Records 8,692 Domestic, Sexual Violence Cases in One Year — AG

No fewer than 8,692 cases of domestic and sexual violence were reported in Lagos State between August 2024 and July 2025, the state government has disclosed.

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro (SAN), revealed this on Friday during a media parley to mark Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month, held every September at Alausa, Ikeja.

Pedro, represented by the State Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary, Hameed Oyenuga, said domestic violence topped the list with 3,685 cases, making it the most prevalent offence within the period under review.

He highlighted that the youngest survivor was just 18 months old, while the oldest was 79 years old, stressing that abuse “cuts across all ages.”

Giving further breakdowns, Pedro said the state recorded:

  • 243 cases of defilement

  • 244 cases of child abuse/physical assault

  • 99 cases of rape

  • 48 cases of sexual harassment

  • 25 cases of sexual assault by penetration

  • 726 family-related disputes

  • 41 cases of cyber harassment

  • 32 cases of threats to life

The Attorney General added that over 140 convictions were secured, and six restraining orders were issued in the year.

On support services, Pedro disclosed that 3,090 children exposed to domestic violence received counselling, 146 survivors accessed free legal representation, and all sexual assault victims were provided free medical care. In addition, 30 individuals were sheltered, while 1,487 survivors and 249 perpetrators underwent therapy, and 13 persons with disabilities received specialised support.

Alimosho, Eti-Osa, Ikorodu, Kosofe, and Oshodi-Isolo topped the list of local councils with the highest adult-related cases, while Ikorodu, Kosofe, Badagry, Alimosho, and Oshodi-Isolo recorded the most child-related cases.
