The Lagos State Government and a shipping company have initiated separate investigations into the destruction of a multibillion-naira coastal groin at the Mayegun Waterfront Scheme. The groin, vital for preventing coastal erosion and protecting infrastructure, was severely damaged on July 29, 2024, when a vessel lost its anchor due to a massive wave and drifted more than 18 kilometers before being stopped.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Mr. Ekundayo Alebiosu, expressed deep concern over the incident, noting that the destroyed groins cost N7 billion. He emphasized that the state will not tolerate damage to its infrastructure and will hold the responsible parties accountable. Alebiosu highlighted the significant financial and environmental impact, stressing the need for thorough investigations.
The vessel's Technical Superintendent Officer, Mr. Fidelis Ilok, described the incident as unfortunate, explaining that the vessel was anchored when the anchor broke and massive waves pushed it toward the shore. Ilok indicated that the groins eventually halted the vessel, mitigating further damage.
Environmental experts and groups have called for a comprehensive approach to coastal management, integrating technological and natural conservation solutions. They stress the importance of involving local communities in coastal projects and addressing climate change impacts. The resolution of this incident is expected to shape future maritime operations and coastal management policies in Lagos.
