Lagos State Shuts Down School After Toddler’s Tragic Drowning

The Lagos State Government has sealed Smiley Kids Montessori School in Sangotedo following the drowning of a two-year-old girl, Rapheala Ogbodo, in the school's swimming pool. The incident, which occurred on January 15, 2025, has prompted an investigation by the Lagos State Safety Commission and the Office of Education Quality Assurance.

A statement from the government confirmed that officials have visited the school to conduct preliminary inquiries and assess possible lapses that led to the tragedy. The school remains closed to allow for a thorough investigation, with the government expressing its condolences to the victim’s family.

Director-General of the Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola, emphasized the importance of adhering to safety regulations to prevent such accidents. He reassured the public that findings from the ongoing investigation would be made public.

The victim’s mother, identified as Ella, has called for justice, recounting how her daughter left for school on Wednesday but tragically did not return alive.
