A tragic incident occurred in Aagba community, Surulere Local Government Area of Oyo State, on April 5, 2025, following a long-standing land dispute that resulted in the death of 70-year-old Madam Rachael Bamidele. The violence also led to the destruction of nine houses and the looting of properties worth millions of naira.
According to the Oyo Police Command spokesperson, Adewale Osifeso, the attacks on the community appeared to be calculated, with homes and properties systematically targeted in connection to ongoing civil litigation over the disputed land. The incident forced many residents to flee their homes, and it is alleged that individuals from a neighboring community were behind the attack.
The Oyo State Police quickly responded to the situation, deploying specialized intelligence and tactical units, including officers from the Police Mobile Force (PMF). This swift action helped restore order, allowing displaced villagers to return to their homes and resume normal activities without further fear.
Investigations led to the arrest of 33-year-old Salawudeen Ismaila, a native of the neighboring Oko community, and eight other suspects. Authorities also recovered three unregistered Boxer motorcycles in connection with the incident. Efforts to apprehend additional suspects are ongoing, and the arrested individuals will soon appear in court.
The Oyo Police Command reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy toward acts of violence and self-help. The Command also reassured residents of its dedication to safeguarding lives and property in the state.
