LASTMA Impounds 40 Vehicles in Crackdown on Illegal Garages

LASTMA

In a decisive move to restore order and ensure smooth traffic flow, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has impounded 40 vehicles—25 commercial and 15 private—operating illegal garages and causing road obstructions in Oyingbo, Ijora, and Idumota. This operation, led by LASTMA’s enforcement team under Mr. Kayode Odunuga and supervised by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, specifically targeted these hotspots notorious for traffic congestion.

Sola Giwa emphasized that this crackdown is part of a broader initiative to enhance the city's transportation network and maintain road order. "Illegal garages have been a significant challenge in our quest to maintain a seamless traffic flow in Lagos," Giwa stated. "These impoundments send a strong message to all offenders that the state will not tolerate activities that disrupt public order and endanger lives."

The illegal garages and unauthorized parking not only obstruct the free movement of vehicles but also pose safety risks to pedestrians. LASTMA’s intervention aims to eliminate these hazards, ease congestion, and improve traffic conditions in the affected areas. Residents and business owners have expressed support for the government's actions, highlighting the significant benefits to their daily activities.

LASTMA has assured the public that this operation will be sustained and extended to other parts of the city where illegal garages and related activities are prevalent. Giwa urged all vehicle owners and operators to adhere to traffic regulations and cooperate with authorities to avoid sanctions. He also called on motorists to report any broken down or abandoned vehicles to LASTMA promptly, reinforcing the government’s commitment to creating a better and more livable Lagos for everyone.
