LAWMA Begins Massive Waste Evacuation Along Lagos–Badagry Expressway

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has begun a bulk waste evacuation exercise along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway, starting with a major clean-up operation at Alaba Rago.

The development was announced on Sunday through a sanitation update shared on the Lagos State Government’s official social media platforms. The update highlighted ongoing efforts to tackle illegal dump sites and improve environmental hygiene along the busy corridor.

According to the statement, LAWMA deployed heavy-duty carriers, loaders and support teams to remove piles of refuse that have accumulated in the Alaba Rago axis, an area that has faced repeated criticism from residents and road users over persistent waste build-up.

Speaking on the exercise, LAWMA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the clean-up would go beyond Alaba Rago as part of a wider sanitation strategy.

“LAWMA has commenced bulk waste evacuation at Alaba Rago along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway, deploying heavy-duty carriers, loaders and support teams to clear illegal dump sites.

“The operation will extend to Okokomaiko, the median around Lagos State University, and onward from Agric Bus Stop to Mile 2, as part of a sustained sanitation framework with monitoring, stakeholder engagement, sensitisation, and enforcement to prevent recurrence,” the statement read.

The agency explained that the operation is not only aimed at clearing waste but also preventing the return of illegal dumping through continuous monitoring, public sensitisation and enforcement.

The intervention follows months of complaints on social media about the poor environmental condition of parts of the Lagos–Badagry Expressway, where refuse heaps have raised concerns among commuters and nearby residents.

LAWMA also reminded the public that keeping Lagos clean requires joint effort, urging residents and businesses to stop indiscriminate dumping and support proper waste disposal practices.
