The lawmaker representing Akwanga, Nassarawa-Eggon, and Wamba Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, Jeremiah Umaru, has trained over 100 primary and secondary school teachers across 35 electoral wards to enhance their teaching skills and improve learning outcomes among students.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the training in Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Umaru said the initiative was part of his plan to strengthen the education sector and equip teachers with modern teaching methods.
He explained that the training focused on school administration and the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to make teaching and learning more effective. He also promised to sustain and expand the programme to include all teachers in his constituency in line with global best practices.
The training featured paper presentations on topics such as The Role of ICT in Teacher Education, Effective School Leadership Management, Financial Management in School Administration, and Drug Abuse and Poor Student Performance.
As part of the programme, a debate competition was also held among schools in the constituency. Over ₦10 million in cash prizes were presented to winners, along with laptops and educational materials.
The Shepherd International College, Akwanga, emerged as the overall winner, receiving ₦1 million and five laptops. Government Science Secondary School, Wamba, and Our Lady of Fatima College, Ogba, came second and third, receiving ₦700,000 and ₦500,000, along with three and two laptops respectively.
Prizes were also given to the best speakers, with ₦500,000 and a laptop going to the winner, ₦250,000 and a laptop to the second, and ₦150,000 and a laptop to the third. The remaining 32 participating schools each received ₦200,000 and educational materials.

Speaking with journalists after the event, Umaru said he was impressed by the students’ confidence and composure during the debate, noting that such competitions help build communication skills and foster academic growth.
He added that the initiative would continue as part of his efforts to empower his constituents and promote education.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, recently reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to repositioning the teaching profession in Nigeria. Speaking during the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration in Abuja, Alausa described teachers as “custodians of stability and architects of change,” stressing that the nation’s strength depends on the strength of its teachers.
