The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria has announced its participation in the two-day nationwide protest organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress. Kennedy Ikemefuna, Head of Media for MWUN, confirmed this decision in a statement on Monday, citing the NLC's directive for its affiliate members nationwide to comply with the protest.
The NLC had earlier scheduled the protest for February 27-28, 2024, following the alleged failure of the government to implement agreements reached on October 2, 2023, after the removal of the fuel subsidy. The protest comes after a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government to address the widespread hardship.
According to Ikechukwu, the MWUN's decision to join the protest is based on the Federal Government's refusal to honor the October 2023 agreement signed with the NLC. He expressed belief that implementing the agreement would have alleviated the suffering caused by certain government policies on Nigerian workers and citizens.
As an affiliate of the NLC, the MWUN has committed to complying with the directive to participate in the protest, showing solidarity with the NLC and its efforts to address workers' welfare and national issues.
