Messi Hits 900 Career Goals but Inter Miami Crash Out

Lionel Messi reached a remarkable milestone on Wednesday, scoring the 900th goal of his legendary career, but it was not enough to save Inter Miami CF from elimination in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

The 38-year-old forward struck early in the seventh minute to give Miami a 1-0 lead in their last-16 second-leg clash against Nashville SC. However, Cristian Espinoza equalised in the 74th minute, sealing a 1-1 aggregate scoreline and sending Nashville through to the quarter-finals on away goals.

The result turned what was meant to be a celebratory night into a disappointing one for Miami, especially as it marked the club’s final game at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.

Messi’s historic goal adds to an already extraordinary career spanning over two decades. Since scoring his first senior goal for FC Barcelona in 2005, he has gone on to score 672 goals for the Spanish giants, 32 for Paris Saint-Germain, and 81 for Inter Miami since joining in 2023. He has also netted 115 goals for Argentina national team.

Despite the setback, Messi remains one of the most prolific players in football history, sitting second on the all-time scoring list behind Cristiano Ronaldo, who has scored 965 career goals.

Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano described Messi’s achievement as “insane,” praising his consistency and impact over the years.

While the team’s Champions Cup journey has come to an end, Messi’s milestone serves as another reminder of his enduring greatness and influence on the game.
