Millions of goods were lost in a devastating fire that engulfed four shops at Nkwo Market, Umunze in Anambra State. The incident, believed to be caused by a power surge, occurred around 1:20 am on Wednesday, wreaking havoc on the market's traders. This unfortunate event comes amid a series of fire outbreaks in the state, prompting concerns from officials.
Anambra Commissioner for Special Duties, Hon Beverly Ikpeazu-Nkemdiche, recently highlighted the surge in fire incidents, with 24 reported within a month. She urged the public to take proactive measures to prevent such disasters. Notably, nine incidents occurred in January, with eight more in February already, indicating a worrying trend.
Eyewitnesses recounted the destruction of goods worth millions, including household items and plastic materials. Fortunately, there were no casualties as fire service personnel swiftly responded to the scene, preventing the fire from spreading further. The head of the Anambra State Fire Service, Agbili, emphasized the importance of preventing power surges by switching off electrical appliances when not in use, to avoid similar incidents in the future.
