Miracles in Ota: Five Children Regain Sight Through Rotary Eye Hospital’s Mission

Rotary

In a heartwarming event, the Rotary District 9110 Eye Hospital in Ota, Ogun State, organized a Cataract Surgical Mission that restored vision to five children. This remarkable initiative was funded by philanthropists based in the United Kingdom. Dr. Yinka Osoba of Rotary Club of Yeovil and Global Sight Solutions, a UK-based NGO focused on blindness prevention, facilitated the mission.

Three of the children had been born blind due to congenital cataracts, while the other two developed cataracts in one eye after injuries. The surgeries, which required general anesthesia, were successfully performed, bringing hope and joy to the families involved. Dr. Basirat Giwa, the secretary of the hospital’s charitable trust, emphasized that this mission is the first of many future interventions aimed at restoring sight and empowering children facing blindness.

An emotional Mrs. Uba, a parent of one of the children, expressed her gratitude: “I appreciate the sponsors, medical personnel, and Rotary District 9110, who contributed to my child’s surgery. This intervention has lifted a great burden off the family.” The hospital continues to seek additional partners, including Rotarians, corporations, and individuals, to expand its outreach and impact.

Since its inception in December 2022, the Rotary Eye Hospital has significantly impacted lives, providing affordable, high-quality cataract surgery to over 2,000 individuals and offering glasses prescriptions and glaucoma management to 3,000 beneficiaries. The hospital’s ongoing efforts aim to further extend these life-changing services to more communities in need.
