The family of the late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has once again called for a transparent and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

In a statement signed by the head of the family, Omolayo Aloba, and Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, the family also directed the late singer’s partner, Wunmi Adebanjo, to stop using the family surname, Aloba, until the outcome of a court-ordered DNA test is released.

According to the statement, the family has appointed new legal representatives to oversee all estate and DNA-related matters. It read:

“The Aloba family remains resolute in its demand for a transparent, independent, and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death. The family is committed to seeing that justice is served, the truth uncovered, and those responsible held accountable.”

The statement further noted that Oladayo Ogungbe of Ogungbe & Ogungbe Attorneys has been appointed as the sole legal representative of the family in all DNA and estate matters, while Dr. Wahab Shittu (SAN) will continue to handle all communications with investigative authorities regarding the cause of death.

To manage Mohbad’s estate, royalties, and intellectual property, the family named three administrators — Ajewole Aloba, Rasaq Famuyiwa, and Alonge Aloba. One slot was left open for Wunmi Adebanjo, should the DNA result confirm that her son, Liam, is Mohbad’s biological child.

The family also requested that Wunmi stop using the surname “Aloba” in any capacity until the paternity issue is resolved, clarifying that no formal or traditional marriage rites were completed between her and the late singer.

“For the avoidance of doubt, no statutory or customary marriage was contracted between the late Mohbad and Wunmi Adebanjo, as the required Yoruba traditional rites (payment of bride price) were never completed,” the family stated.

However, the family assured that if the DNA test confirms that Liam is indeed Mohbad’s son, both mother and child would be duly recognized in the estate administration process.

They also appealed to the public to remain calm and patient while the legal and family matters are concluded, noting that a new burial and memorial date will be announced in due course.

“Justice for Mohbad remains our unwavering goal, and we will continue to pursue it through lawful and peaceful means,” the statement added.

In response, Wunmi’s lawyer, Kabir Akingbolu, described the family’s directive as illegal, saying they lacked the power to stop his client from bearing her late husband’s name. He also accused the family of stalling the DNA process despite several court orders and opportunities.

“Nobody can stop her from bearing Aloba. That is the name given to her by her husband, and under the law, she has every right to keep it,” Akingbolu said, citing legal precedents.

The renewed disagreement marks another chapter in the ongoing dispute between Mohbad’s family and his partner over the paternity of their child and control of the late singer’s estate.

Mohbad passed away at the age of 27 on September 12, 2023, sparking widespread public debate and calls for justice. The police have since launched a special investigation into his death.
