Multiple Bomb Explosions Rock Maiduguri Amid Boko Haram Attacks

Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, was rocked by multiple bomb explosions on Monday evening, leaving an unspecified number of people dead and many others injured. The blasts occurred around the Monday Market and near a security post at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital at approximately 7:02 pm, following early-morning attacks on three military positions across the state.

The Federal Fire Service in Borno State confirmed its deployment to the scene, while eyewitnesses reported seeing casualties rushed to hospitals for treatment. Residents described the explosions as sudden and frightening, causing panic across parts of the metropolis.

Earlier in the day, suspected Boko Haram insurgents launched coordinated attacks on military outposts in Ajilari, Damboa, and Baga around midnight and early morning. The attacks were repelled by combined security forces, including troops from Operation Hadin Kai, police, the Civilian Joint Task Force, and other local defense units. Authorities confirmed that security personnel were unharmed, though insurgents likely suffered casualties.

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, condemned the attacks as “despicable, cruel, and cowardly,” highlighting that they targeted civilians during the holy month of Ramadan. He assured residents that security agencies are on high alert and urged citizens to remain vigilant while reporting suspicious activities.

Counterterrorism experts believe the assaults were likely retaliatory actions in response to recent military operations that neutralized insurgent commanders. They warn that the incidents reveal continued operational capabilities among terrorist groups, especially in remote communities along the Sambisa–Lake Chad corridor.

The Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation also condemned the attacks, calling them “cowardly assaults” that threaten national security and stability. The foundation called for increased support for security forces, improved military logistics, and active community cooperation to curb insurgent activities.

As Maiduguri returns to relative calm, authorities continue rescue, assessment, and security operations across affected areas while emphasizing the importance of public vigilance and intelligence sharing to prevent further attacks.
