Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has launched a scathing attack on President Bola Tinubu, accusing him of mismanaging Nigeria’s economy and manipulating statistics to cover up the country’s worsening economic crisis.
In a strongly worded statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Obi revisited a controversial comment Tinubu made during the 2022 presidential campaign in Delta State, where the then-APC flagbearer mocked Obi’s data-driven approach, allegedly saying:
“Na statistics we go chop? All I want is to put food on the table of Nigerians.”
Obi responded pointedly:
“Now, two years into his four-year tenure, Nigeria is classified as one of the hungriest nations in the world, with millions not knowing where their next meal will come from.”
He accused the Tinubu administration of "overfeeding Nigerians with wrong statistics", citing misleading figures on unemployment, inflation, and GDP to spin a narrative of economic recovery that sharply contradicts the reality on the ground.
“President Tinubu is now overfeeding Nigerians with wrong statistics... all to put a positive spin on our deteriorating economic and household conditions,” Obi wrote.
He ended the statement by reaffirming his view on leadership:
“Governance is not rocket science. It’s not a gamble. It requires sincerity of purpose, character, competence, capacity, and compassion.”
Obi’s remarks come amid widespread public frustration over rising food prices, joblessness, and declining living standards — a sharp contrast to the economic optimism portrayed by the presidency.
