The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public warning regarding the illegal distribution of an unregistered brand of condoms in Nigeria. Following inspections by the Post-Marketing Surveillance directorate, Foula condoms, which are packaged in sets of three, were found in circulation in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, and Zango, Katsina State.
NAFDAC highlighted that the Foula condoms, labeled in a non-English language, are not registered in Nigeria, and their safety, quality, and efficacy are unverified. In a statement, the agency emphasized the importance of using registered condoms to ensure effective protection against unintended pregnancies, HIV, and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), noting that the use of unverified condoms could compromise user safety due to the risk of leakage or breakage.
NAFDAC has directed all zonal directors and state coordinators to intensify surveillance efforts and remove unregistered products from the market. Importers, retailers, healthcare professionals, and consumers are urged to stay vigilant and only procure medical products from licensed suppliers. The agency also encouraged the public to report suspected cases of substandard products or adverse reactions using NAFDAC’s hotline (0800-162-3322), the Med-Safety app, or by emailing sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.
This alert serves as a reminder for Nigerians to ensure product authenticity for health safety and to report any suspicious medical devices to NAFDAC for regulatory action.
