The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has distributed 1,528.2 metric tonnes of assorted grains to Jigawa State as part of a federal initiative to support vulnerable populations across Nigeria. The distribution, overseen by NEMA, was announced on Monday in a statement posted on X.com.
This initiative, approved by President Bola Tinubu and managed by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, is part of a broader effort to alleviate food insecurity across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The grains are sourced from the National Strategic Reserve, which has allocated 42,000 metric tonnes of food commodities for free distribution.
The statement from NEMA highlighted that the allocated share for Jigawa State includes 594 metric tonnes (11,880 bags) of maize, 691.2 metric tonnes (13,824 bags) of sorghum, and 243 metric tonnes (4,860 bags) of millet. These food items are set to be distributed equitably across all local government areas in Jigawa State.
This distribution follows the Federal Government's earlier announcement in February regarding the release of the 42,000 metric tonnes of grains to mitigate the ongoing food crisis in the country. By March, portions of these grains had already been distributed to eight states, including Kano, Kwara, Kogi, Ebonyi, Adamawa, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Taraba, as part of the ongoing efforts to reach every corner of the nation.
NEMA's efforts underscore the government's commitment to addressing food insecurity and providing critical support to vulnerable communities across Nigeria during these challenging times.
