The new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, has promised to restore credibility and public trust in Nigeria’s electoral system, describing his appointment as a divine call to serve.

Speaking at the State House in Abuja shortly after being sworn in by the President on Thursday, Amupitan said his goal is clear — to deliver free, fair, and credible elections while strengthening the nation’s democracy.

During his first meeting with INEC directors, the professor emphasized teamwork, discipline, and integrity as the foundation for achieving the commission’s mandate.

“Our mandate is clear — to deliver free, fair, and credible elections that reflect the will of the Nigerian people. To achieve this, we must work together as a team,” he said.

He assured INEC staff of his commitment to transparency and accountability, pledging to lead by example.

“As we begin this new chapter, I want to assure you of my commitment to uphold the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and discipline in all our operations,” Amupitan stated.

Focusing on the upcoming Anambra State governorship election, the INEC boss described it as a crucial test for the commission and an opportunity to rebuild public confidence.

“The Anambra election is not just another poll. It’s a defining moment for INEC to prove our dedication to credible elections. The eyes of the nation are on us. Every voter must feel confident that their vote will count — because that’s our constitutional duty,” he said.

Amupitan also promised to prioritize staff welfare, recognizing the vital role INEC workers play in ensuring credible polls.

“We’ll demand a lot from you, so your welfare will be a priority. We’ll work hard to provide better working conditions and the tools you need to perform effectively,” he assured.

Accompanied by his wife, children, and colleagues from the University of Jos, where he previously taught, Amupitan expressed gratitude for the support and excitement surrounding his appointment.

“I heard the whole university went agog when the news broke. They said, ‘One of ours has been called to serve.’ It’s a great honour,” he said with a smile.

Despite acknowledging the weight of the role, he said he was ready for the task ahead.

“Some people have told me they don’t envy me, but I’m excited about this journey. Together, let’s uphold democratic values and ensure credible elections in Nigeria,” he said.

He ended his speech on a reflective note, describing his appointment as part of God’s plan.

“Maybe if I had a choice, I wouldn’t have come. But I can see that God is moving in this country. My coming here is divine. If God says go, who am I to refuse? I believe INEC has a vital role in birthing a new Nigeria,” he concluded.
