Former Anambra State Governor and ex-Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, has shared chilling details of how his convoy was attacked by armed men disguised in police and military uniforms.
Ngige spoke about the incident on Friday while hosting the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, at his home in Alor, Idemili South LGA. Obi visited to sympathise with him and his team after the violent attack.
Ngige explained that he had been in Anambra since Saturday and had sent his aides on errands when the ambush happened. The attackers opened fire on his convoy as the vehicles approached Umuoji. In the chaos, a woman was shot dead while taking a video of the incident, and his police orderly was shot in the leg. The assailants also seized his rifle and uniform.
“As you can see, I am alive. I am not dead,” Ngige clarified, dispelling rumours. He added, “The assailants were dressed in police and army uniforms. They chased my convoy, shooting. My security man fought until he ran out of bullets.”
Ngige revealed that the gunmen accused the policemen of “serving a zoo government,” suggesting a possible link to rising tensions surrounding the continued detention of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu. He warned that the attackers were “mopping up arms and police uniforms,” which could signal broader security threats.

While he could not confirm if he was personally targeted, he admitted it was possible since his longtime pilot driver is widely recognised. “On the other hand, they might have just attacked to harvest guns and uniforms,” he added.
Ngige also called for a political solution to Nnamdi Kanu’s case, saying the situation was worsening security tensions. “Something is wrong. Even the psychiatric evaluation missed something,” he said, urging the government to consider releasing Kanu on political grounds.
Peter Obi, after listening to Ngige’s account, thanked God for his safety and sympathised with the family of the woman killed during the incident.
Eyewitnesses earlier confirmed that Ngige was not in the convoy at the time of the attack. His injured orderly has undergone surgery and is expected to recover.
