Governor Mohammed Umar Bago of Niger State has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic tanker explosion that claimed at least 35 lives and left 17 others injured along the Bida–Agaie Road on Tuesday.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, the governor described the incident as “worrisome, unfortunate, and heartbreaking.”
According to reports, the accident occurred around 2:40 p.m. when a tanker carrying petrol lost control and fell on its side near Essa Village in Katcha Local Government Area.
The Niger State Police Command said residents rushed to the scene to scoop fuel from the fallen tanker before it suddenly caught fire, resulting in a massive explosion.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, said,
“A report was received from the DPO of Katcha Division that a lone tanker conveying PMS fell by the roadside. Unfortunately, some members of the public rushed to the scene to scoop fuel, and in the process, the tanker was engulfed in flames.”

He confirmed that 48 people were affected, with 31 dying on the spot, while 17 others sustained varying degrees of injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Three motorcycles were also burnt in the inferno.
Security agencies and rescue teams were immediately deployed to the scene, while investigations are ongoing to trace the driver and owner of the tanker.
Reacting to the tragedy, Governor Bago prayed for the souls of the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery. He also condemned the recurring act of scooping petrol from fallen tankers, calling it a dangerous and needless risk.
“It is disheartening that people still rush to scoop fuel despite numerous warnings about the dangers. I urge residents to value their lives, no matter the situation,” the governor said.
The incident adds to the rising number of tanker-related explosions in Nigeria, which have continued to claim lives and property across several states.
