In a bold move to combat rising criminality and perceived disorder in Minna, the capital of Niger State, Governor Umar Bago has issued a controversial directive ordering the arrest of individuals sporting dreadlocks. The order, issued during a high-level security meeting at the Government House on Tuesday, mandates that anyone found with dreadlocks be detained, their hair forcibly shaved, and a fine imposed.
“We will have zero tolerance for rascality. Anybody that you find with dreadlocks, arrest, barb the hair, and fine him,” Governor Bago declared. “Nobody should carry any kind of haircut inside Minna. I have given marching orders to security agencies.”
The governor’s firm stance came as part of an ongoing effort to crack down on what he describes as a growing wave of criminal activities and societal disorder in the state. The security meeting, attended by police officers, traditional rulers, and community leaders, focused on formulating strategies to restore order.
Governor Bago’s directive extends beyond haircuts, with further strict measures including a total ban on commercial motorcycles and tricycles in Minna between the hours of 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., unless in the case of medical emergencies. The governor also warned parents to take responsibility for their children’s actions, stressing that any house found harboring criminals would be demolished.
“Parents should warn their children. From this moment, it’s 100% fire-for-fire,” Bago said, emphasizing the no-nonsense approach his administration is prepared to take.
The controversial measures have sparked mixed reactions, with some citizens questioning the extent of the governor’s powers, while others support the crackdown on crime. The governor, however, remains resolute in his commitment to ensuring a safer, more orderly environment in Niger State.
