More than 200 terrorists were convicted during the recently concluded Phase Six terrorism trials at the Kainji Detention Facility in Niger State. Conducted from December 9 to 13, the trials saw individuals receive sentences ranging from death penalties to life imprisonment and 20–70 years behind bars, reflecting the severity of their crimes. The convictions highlight the government’s commitment to justice and the fight against terrorism.

Among those sentenced were perpetrators of heinous crimes, including attacks on women and children, destruction of religious sites, and the abduction of civilians in Borno State’s Gina Kara Kai community. The trials also targeted individuals involved in terrorism financing, who received life imprisonment, emphasizing the Federal Government’s determination to dismantle terrorist networks.

The trials, presided over by five Federal High Court judges, adhered to international standards of justice and were supervised by the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation and the National Counter Terrorism Centre. This coordinated effort ensured a fair and transparent process, reinforcing public trust in the judicial system while restoring peace and stability to affected regions.

Attorney General of the Federation, Chief Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu commended the judiciary, military, and law enforcement agencies for their dedication. The administration has strengthened institutions and implemented measures to protect judicial officers, witnesses, and stakeholders, aligning Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts with global best practices and safeguarding the rights of victims.
