The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Akintunde Sawyerr, announced that 60,000 students from federal tertiary institutions have registered for the student loan scheme since the portal's launch last Friday.
Sawyerr revealed that applications from students of state-owned tertiary institutions would be accepted in three weeks. He urged the heads of these institutions to start uploading student details to the portal.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Sawyerr highlighted that the agency is collaborating with 126 tertiary institutions for the loan scheme. He noted that the portal has garnered over 9.5 million visits since its launch.
The student loan scheme will commence with 1.2 million beneficiaries, covering their tuition fees, which will be paid directly to the institutions. Additionally, stipends will be provided to students on a monthly basis to support their other needs while pursuing their education.
