Nigeria Mourns Victims of New Year Ski Resort Fire in Switzerland

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep sadness over the deadly fire outbreak that occurred at a ski resort in Switzerland on New Year’s Day, claiming dozens of lives and leaving several others injured.

In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, Nigeria said it received news of the incident with profound sorrow. The fire reportedly broke out in the early hours of January 1 at Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, a popular and exclusive ski resort, during New Year celebrations.

Emergency responders were said to have arrived promptly at the scene, while injured victims were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Swiss authorities have since launched investigations to determine the cause of the blaze, which dampened festivities at the resort known for attracting tourists from across the globe.

Conveying Nigeria’s condolences, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, said the government and people of Nigeria stand in solidarity with Switzerland at this difficult time. He extended heartfelt sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives and wished the injured a speedy and full recovery, adding that Nigeria’s thoughts and prayers are with the Swiss people as they mourn the tragedy.
