According to the 2023 global Women Peace and Security Index Nigeria has been ranked as the 10th most unsafe country for women in Africa. The index, which evaluates women's inclusion, justice, and security, placed the Central African Republic as the most unsafe country for women, followed by DR Congo and South Sudan.
In contrast, Seychelles, the smallest country in Africa, ranked as the safest country for women on the continent, followed by Cape Verde and South Africa. The index, which assesses 177 countries, highlights disparities in women's safety and well-being across different regions and indicators.
The Women Peace and Security Index is a valuable tool for identifying areas where resources and accountability are most needed to improve women's status, benefiting society as a whole. The index is published by the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security and the PRIO Centre on Gender, Peace and Security, with support from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
