Nigeria excelled in athletics, clinching an impressive 11 gold, six silver, and four bronze medals in the event, totaling 21 medals. Despite dominating in wrestling and weightlifting, Nigeria trailed behind Egypt, who topped the overall medals table with 186 medals, including 100 gold, 44 silver, and 42 bronze.
South Africa secured third place with 32 gold, 32 silver, and 41 bronze medals. Algeria, Tunisia, hosts Ghana, Morocco, Mauritius, Ethiopia, and Kenya completed the Top 10 spots in that order. Nigeria's best-ever performance in the athletics event at the African Games was in 1995 when the athletes won a total of 32 medals, comprising 15 gold, nine silver, and eight bronze.
In boxing, Nigerian boxers achieved remarkable success on the final day of the competition, winning eight out of the 10 finals they qualified for. The women's team secured five gold medals, with Jacinta Umunnakwe (81kg), Blessing Oraekwe (70kg), Cynthia Ogunsemilore (60kg), Patricia Mbata (75kg), and Joy Nene Ojo (57kg) emerging as champions. For the men, Ifeanyi Onyekwere (92+kg), Adams Olaore (92kg), and Omole Dolapo (57kg) clinched gold medals.
