The National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) in Nigeria, under the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), has emphasized the need to disrupt terrorism financing as a crucial approach to weaken terrorist networks. Speaking in Abuja, NCTC National Coordinator Maj.-Gen. Adamu Laka highlighted that cutting off financial support is vital to combat terrorism effectively.
During a meeting with Maj.-Gen. Mohammed Bin Saheed Al-Moghedi, Secretary-General of the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC), Laka noted that a collective global approach, supported by intelligence sharing and capacity building, is essential to address terrorism and violent extremism. The NCTC aims to expand collaboration with the IMCTC, with areas of focus including intelligence exchange and high-level counter-terrorism missions. Additionally, Nigeria is set to send more military officers to the IMCTC for advanced counter-terrorism training.
Laka also shared plans for the NCTC to become a regional center for counter-terrorism, covering West Africa and the Sahel, with non-kinetic preventive measures for long-term peace. He announced that Nigeria had presented this initiative to the United Nations General Assembly for adoption, potentially transforming the NCTC into a counter-terrorism hub for Africa.
