In a series of decisive air operations conducted between June 18 and June 22, 2024, the Air Component of Operation Delta Safe successfully dismantled 13 illegal oil refining sites and destroyed 7 Cotonou boats in Rivers, Bayelsa, and Imo States. This operation represents a significant blow to the region's rampant oil theft and illegal refining activities.

On June 18, air strikes targeted illegal refining sites near the Imo River, where seven overhead tanks were discovered and subsequently destroyed. The operation witnessed suspected bunkerers fleeing the scene as the tanks were obliterated. The next day, on June 19, air strikes extended to Wilcourt in Rivers State, where an illegal site and a canoe filled with illegally refined products, along with several gun boats, were destroyed.

Acting on intelligence reports, the aircrew located and destroyed illegal refining sites about 6 kilometers from Tunu in Bayelsa State with precision strikes. This operation further underlined the commitment of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to eradicating oil theft and illegal refining in the region.

On June 22, the aircrew identified five J-5 buses, possibly reconfigured into mini tankers, at the bank of the Imo River. These buses were attempting to siphon illegally refined products from surface tanks. The air component swiftly destroyed the refining sites feeding these buses. In response to the strikes, the buses dispersed, with some taking cover under trees to evade detection.

According to Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, Director of Public Relations and Information for the Nigerian Air Force, the success of these operations can be attributed to improved intelligence, enhanced air-to-ground coordination, and the NAF's increased agility and resilience. He emphasized that these air strikes will continue until the activities of economic saboteurs and oil thieves are significantly minimized.

"The recent air strikes have been highly effective due to our improved intelligence and operational coordination," said Gabkwet. "We are committed to sustaining these efforts until the activities of these saboteurs are reduced to the barest minimum."

The Nigerian Air Force's continued vigilance and proactive measures underscore the nation's commitment to combating oil theft and ensuring the security of its natural resources.
