Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Set to Make History with First-ever Conference in Kano

In a landmark decision, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) is set to hold its annual conference in Kano, marking the first time the ancient northern city will host this prestigious event. NBA President Yakubu Maikyau (SAN) made the announcement during a press briefing held yesterday as part of the association’s Kano branch’s 2024 Law Week.

Accompanied by esteemed legal figures including Bola Alabi, the National Chairman of Legal Practice, and Aminu Gadanya, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the conference, Maikyau revealed that approximately 150,000 lawyers have been called to the Bar in Nigeria, highlighting the association's widespread presence with 128 branches across the nation.

Scheduled to take place from June 2 to 5, the conference bears the theme "Administration of Justice in Nigeria: Challenges and Reforms." Maikyau emphasized the historical significance of this event, stating, "This will be the first ever NBA annual conference in the northern part of the country. And the venue is Kano. So, it is going to be historic."

During the Law Week's inauguration, Governor Abba Yusuf, represented by his deputy Aminu Gwarzo, lauded the theme, "Turning Point – Interrogating the Impact of Certain Innovations in Enhancing the Administration and Delivery of Justice in Nigeria," as timely and pertinent. He expressed optimism that the event would contribute to the enhancement of the nation’s justice system.

Acknowledging the pivotal role of the NBA in upholding the rule of law and equity, Governor Yusuf urged participants to leverage the gathering as a catalyst for future advancements in the legal landscape. He reassured attendees of Kano's safety and hospitality, inviting them to engage freely throughout their stay. In a gesture of appreciation, the NBA president presented the governor with a token in recognition of his commitment to justice and leadership.
