Following an extensive meeting, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has expressed awareness of the widespread hunger affecting Nigerians and voiced appreciation for President Bola Tinubu’s reforms aimed at addressing economic and social challenges. The governors also highlighted efforts to support the ongoing changes to alleviate hardships faced by the populace.
Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, speaking on behalf of the forum, affirmed the NGF's commitment to fostering partnerships with private and public organizations to improve living conditions. A major focus of the meeting was on energy reforms, specifically the total removal of fuel subsidies, as confirmed by Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) Group CEO Mele Kyari, who assured the governors of ongoing efforts to stabilize fuel prices.
Uzodinma also noted the governors’ plans to collaborate with the African Medical Centre of Excellence, a facility developed in partnership with the African Development Bank and King’s College Hospital, London. The hospital will specialize in treating oncology, cardiovascular issues, hematological care, and conducting advanced research, which aligns with the NGF’s commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure.
Reflecting on economic reforms, Uzodinma emphasized the governors’ support for increasing domestic petroleum refining capabilities, which he sees as critical to strengthening Nigeria’s economic self-reliance. “We should repair our Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna refineries, and create jobs to keep people engaged, reducing crime and making us proud to call ourselves an oil-producing nation,” Uzodinma stated.
Uzodinma also highlighted new security strategies introduced by the Director General of the Department of Security Services (DSS) and the National Security Adviser’s representative, signaling improved collaboration between federal security bodies and state governments. This partnership is intended to address ongoing security threats such as banditry and kidnapping more effectively.
Through the “renewed hope agenda” of President Tinubu, the NGF pledged to support reforms and promote unity to achieve a more stable and secure Nigeria.
