The Nigerian military has reiterated its dedication to defending democracy and resisting any efforts to undermine the democratic process. This reaffirmation came from Chief of Defense Staff, General Christopher Musa, during a press briefing at the State House in Abuja on Monday, following a National Security Council meeting presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
General Musa emphasized Nigeria's sovereignty and democratic principles, highlighting that all security agencies are committed to protecting and promoting democracy. He sternly warned against any actions aimed at undemocratic changes of government, stating, "Democracy is what we stand for, and democracy is what we will continue to defend."
The military also declared that flying foreign flags on Nigerian soil is a treasonable offense, following recent incidents of Russian flags being displayed by protesters in Kano and Kaduna states. General Musa made it clear that such actions would not be tolerated and those responsible would face prosecution. "We are warning in clear terms that we will not accept anybody flying any foreign flag in Nigeria. That is a treasonable offense," he stated.
Regarding ongoing protests, General Musa issued a stern warning to those planning to disrupt Nigeria's peace and stability. He assured the public that security agencies are working together to maintain order and warned potential troublemakers to desist from their plans. "The President has given clear instructions to security forces to maintain peace and stability in the country," he added, emphasizing the military's commitment to ensuring tranquility.
