Nigerians Demand Fresh Tests on NNPC Petrol Amid Quality Controversy

Nigerians are urging the Federal Government to conduct new tests on the quality of petrol sold at filling stations following a viral video claiming that NNPC fuel burns faster than Dangote petrol. The video, which showed a test with two generators, sparked debate after the NNPC denied the allegations, asserting that its fuel meets industry standards.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) dismissed the claims, stating that the petrol in question came from the Dangote refinery. However, Dangote officials denied supplying the disputed batch to NNPC, fueling public calls for an independent investigation by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Council (FCCPC).

Social media reactions highlighted concerns over the accuracy of the content creator’s test. Users stressed the need for a controlled experiment supervised by regulatory authorities. PETROAN, the Petroleum Products Retail Outlet Owners Association of Nigeria, defended NNPC, asserting that independent laboratory tests confirmed the quality of NNPC fuel, meeting regulatory standards for safety, performance, and environmental impact.

PETROAN National President, Billy Gillis-Harry, urged caution in spreading unverified claims, advocating for healthy competition based on quality and consumer satisfaction.

The controversy underscores the growing demand for transparency and consumer protection within Nigeria’s petroleum sector.
