Nigerians Switch Network Providers as MTN Hikes Data, SMS Prices

MTN

Nigerians are abandoning MTN Nigeria in favor of alternative network providers following a steep increase in data and SMS tariffs by the telecommunications giant.

MTN recently implemented up to a 50% price adjustment on its data bundles and SMS rates, sparking widespread backlash from customers.

New Data and SMS Prices

  • 15GB data plan: Now ₦6,500, up from ₦4,500.
  • 20GB data plan: Now ₦7,500, previously ₦5,500.
  • 1.5TB (90-day plan): Increased from ₦150,000 to ₦240,000.
  • 600GB (90-day plan): Now ₦120,000, up from ₦75,000.
  • SMS rates: Increased from ₦4 to ₦6 per message.

The hike exceeds the 50% increase reportedly approved by the federal government and contradicts MTN’s initial proposal of a 150% increase, which was rejected by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Customer Reactions and Backlash

Many Nigerians took to social media to express outrage over the sudden increase.

Twitter user @not_ahmedjunior wrote:

"It’s nearly impossible for the average Nigerian to progress. The 15GB data plan that used to cost ₦2,000 is now ₦6,000.”

Another user, @official_GZU, noted:

“Complaining won’t change anything because telecom operators operate within a profit-driven system. Prices are influenced by inflation, currency devaluation, and market forces.”

Some customers have begun boycotting MTN, opting for Airtel, Globacom, and 9mobile, which have yet to announce similar price increases.

A frustrated user, Khan, tweeted:

"I think it’s high time we boycotted MTN. Their network is terrible, and their data plans are a rip-off. The 15GB package doesn’t even last three days.”

Similarly, @neefenawti blamed poor regulation, saying:

“I won’t even blame MTN. In a country where the president said he does not believe in price control, what do you expect? The government is watching people plunge further into poverty.”

Discontinued “Hot Deals” Package

Adding to the frustration, MTN reportedly discontinued its "Hot Deals" package (*121#), which previously offered customers discounted data plans.

Unclear Future for Telecom Pricing

MTN has yet to issue an official statement explaining the price adjustment. With Airtel, Glo, and 9mobile still maintaining their current rates, many Nigerians are switching providers in protest.

There are growing calls for regulatory intervention to ensure affordable and transparent telecom pricing amid the country’s economic challenges.
