Niger’s Leader Faces Public Outrage Over Baseless Allegations Against Nigeria

Nigerien President Abdourahmane Tchiani has sparked widespread criticism following allegations that Nigeria is conspiring with France to destabilize Niger. In a Christmas Day speech, Tchiani accused Nigeria of hosting French soldiers and establishing terrorist training camps in Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi states. The Nigerian government has dismissed these claims as unfounded, with National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and other officials urging regional cooperation instead of divisive rhetoric.

Critics in Niger, including commentator Maidalili Namu, have labeled Tchiani's claims as excuses for his administration’s failures after 17 months in power. Namu accused the regime of spreading falsehoods to mask its inability to address critical issues like insecurity, economic hardship, and unemployment. Another critic, Hamid Ahmadu, highlighted Tchiani’s lack of action against the alleged terrorist hubs despite claiming knowledge of their existence.

Nigerians and international observers have also condemned Tchiani’s remarks. Defence expert Zagazola refuted the existence of a French military base in Borno State, calling the allegations baseless. Nigeria’s Special Adviser on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, described Tchiani’s statements as propaganda aimed at sowing discord in northern Nigeria. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to regional unity and combating terrorism.

Civil groups like the Arewa Think Tank have urged politicians to avoid fueling tensions between the nations, warning against destabilizing narratives. Meanwhile, the League of Northern Democrats criticized the Nigerian government’s response, demanding clearer explanations to counter lingering doubts about arms proliferation and regional security concerns.
