The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has denounced the alleged raid on its Abuja headquarters by security operatives, describing it as a severe breach of democratic rights. According to a statement from NLC’s Head of Media and Public Relations, Comrade Benson Upah, the raid occurred on Wednesday evening, after workers had left the building. The security team, consisting of personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and unidentified plain-clothed operatives, reportedly seized books and publications that they claimed were linked to the #EndBadGovernance protests.

The NLC condemned the intrusion, arguing that such actions set a troubling precedent for democracy in Nigeria. The statement criticized the lack of legal documentation presented by the security operatives and the forceful breaking into their office without proper authorization. This incident, the NLC stated, marks a new low in security operations and a dangerous shift towards state-sponsored repression.

Earlier that day, the NLC’s National Executive Council had condemned the excessive use of force by security agencies against protesters and the labeling of peaceful demonstrations as "treasonous." The timing of the raid, coming shortly after this condemnation, has intensified fears of escalating state violence.

In response, the NLC has called for an international investigation into the raid and has instructed staff to stay away from their offices until a thorough inspection can confirm that no incriminating materials or harmful substances were planted. They have demanded the immediate withdrawal of the security forces and the return of all seized materials by the end of August 8, 2024. Failure to comply could lead to a nationwide strike, emphasizing the NLC’s commitment to defending public discourse and democratic engagement.
