The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has nullified the reelection of the National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, and his National Working Committee following a recent national convention in Nnewi, Anambra State.
During a meeting of the NLC Political Commission Stakeholders in Abuja, a communiqué was issued expressing no confidence in the convention and the new leadership. The statement, signed by Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku, Mr Abdulwahed Omar, and Mr S.O.Z. Ejiofor, among others, announced the formation of a Transition Committee to oversee the party's affairs temporarily.
The stakeholders directed the Transition Committee to manage the party's operations until a comprehensive national convention is conducted. They also instructed the committee to take over party offices across Nigeria and initiate the recovery of party assets.
Additionally, the Transition Committee is tasked with auditing cases of fraud, impersonation, and forgery involving former Labour Party officers and ensuring their prosecution. The stakeholders emphasized the need for an inclusive national convention within three months, starting from ward to national levels.
The stakeholders further mandated the Transition Committee to revalidate current party members and register new members to achieve a membership target of 10 million. They also notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and relevant security agencies of the new developments within the party, emphasizing that the Labour Party is open to all Nigerians regardless of background.
