The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has officially ceased importing refined petroleum products, according to Mele Kyari, NNPC's Group Chief Executive Officer. Speaking at the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) 42nd annual international conference in Lagos, Kyari revealed that NNPC now sources its fuel supply solely from domestic refineries, including the Dangote Petroleum Refinery. “Today, NNPC does not import any product; we are taking only from domestic refineries,” he affirmed.
Kyari also responded to claims that NNPC might be undermining local refineries by not supporting domestic production. He clarified, "We are very proud part-owners of Dangote refinery...We saw an opportunity that there is a clear market for at least 300,000 barrels of our production." Kyari emphasized that NNPC’s commitment to supply crude to local refineries is a strategic choice to ensure market stability for Nigerian crude oil and reduce dependency on international buyers.
Kyari added that this approach aligns with NNPC’s long-term goal to support domestic production and reduce external pressure on crude oil exports.
