“No Mercy for Traffic Offenders!” — FCTA to Prosecute Red Light Runners and One-Way Drivers in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has issued a stern warning to motorists in Abuja: stop driving against traffic and running red lights—or face legal consequences.

In a statement released by the FCT Transportation Secretariat, the Director of the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), Abdulateef Bello, announced that violators will be arrested, prosecuted before a Mobile Court, and have their vehicles impounded.

“The FCT Transportation Secretariat has observed with concern the alarming increase in one-way driving and red light violations within the city,” the statement read. “Henceforth, any motorist caught flouting these regulations will face immediate arrest, vehicle impoundment, and prosecution.”

According to the FCT Road Transport Regulations 2023 (Regulation 18, Nos. 172–173), driving against traffic and ignoring traffic signals are serious offences with clearly defined penalties, including fines and possible court sanctions.

The FCTA’s crackdown signals a renewed commitment to road safety and law enforcement in Nigeria’s capital, as authorities attempt to curb reckless driving that endangers lives and worsens traffic congestion.

Residents and drivers are advised to comply strictly with traffic rules or risk severe legal and financial consequences.
