Governors of Nigeria’s North-East states have raised fresh alarm over looming humanitarian and economic challenges, warning that the region may face devastating floods and a food crisis if urgent steps are not taken.

Meeting under the North-East Governors’ Forum (NEGF) in Jalingo, Taraba State, the leaders issued a communiqué at the end of their 12th session on Saturday, chaired by Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum.

The governors said forecasts from credible climate agencies pointed to severe flooding in the coming months, urging proactive measures and massive sensitisation of communities living along floodplains.

“The Forum took into cognizance the forecast of credible agencies on climate risk and the impending flood disaster in the subregion. We call for proactive measures to confront the flood and robust sensitisation of settlers along the flood plains,” the communiqué read.

They appealed to the Federal Government and the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) to speed up the reconstruction of critical infrastructure, especially bridges destroyed by previous floods.

On agriculture, the governors expressed concern over the surging cost of farm inputs, warning it could reduce harvests and worsen food insecurity next year. To avert crisis, they urged for subsidies and stronger support for dry-season farming.

Energy poverty was another focus, as the governors directed the subregional Power and Energy Committee to develop an integrated Power Masterplan to tackle persistent electricity challenges.
