The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ebonyi State has announced the arrest of 85 suspects between January and March this year. State Commandant Dr. Willie Elijah disclosed this during a briefing in Abakaliki, marking his first 100 days in office since assuming duty on January 8.
Of the 65 cases reported to the command, six have resulted in convictions, while the remaining cases are at various stages of prosecution. Additionally, one kidnap victim was rescued within the same period.
Elijah highlighted the NSCDC's efforts in ensuring school safety through patrols, especially by a specially trained female squad assigned to protect pupils, students, teachers, and school properties. He also mentioned plans to establish a creche, nursery, and primary school, set to be operational by September.
To enhance security, crack squads have been deployed and rapid response squads re-invigorated. Elijah emphasized collaboration with other security agencies in Ebonyi, aiming to secure lives and properties.
The commandant thanked Governor Francis Nwifuru for the state government's support, and he urged continued public support for the NSCDC's activities. He emphasized the need for the public to view the NSCDC as allies and not to fear or resist their personnel, noting that every apprehended person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
