The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has shut down an illegal mineral storage site in the Onne area of Rivers State.

The operation, carried out by the NSCDC Mining Marshals in the South-South Zone in collaboration with the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, followed credible intelligence reports that led to the discovery of several warehouses used to store illegally mined minerals.

According to a statement released on Saturday by the corps spokesperson, Afolabi Babawale, the move is part of ongoing efforts to protect Nigeria’s mineral resources and ensure the safety of local communities.

“In a bold step to safeguard the nation’s resources, the NSCDC Mining Marshals have dismantled an illegal mineral storage network uncovered within the Onne axis of Rivers State,” the statement read in part.

The operators were reportedly unable to present the required permits, licences, or evidence of royalty payments to the Federal Government.

DSC Emmanuel Abiahu, who led the enforcement team, said the exercise was in line with the directive of the Commandant General, Prof. Ahmed Audi. He added that the corps would continue to clamp down on illegal mining activities and promote lawful operations within the sector.
