The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has initiated an investigation into the tragic petrol tanker explosion that occurred in Majia town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State on Tuesday night, resulting in the deaths of at least 157 people.
The explosion happened when a petrol tanker, traveling from Kano to Nguru, Yobe State, lost control and crashed. Residents who gathered to scoop spilled fuel were caught in the blast when the tanker exploded, sparking a massive fire.
Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, NSIB Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, confirmed the bureau's involvement, stating that a team of experts had been deployed to investigate the cause of the accident and provide safety recommendations to prevent future incidents.
Captain Alex Badeh Jr., NSIB Director General, expressed condolences to the victims' families and reaffirmed the bureau’s commitment to uncovering the causes of the explosion. He also emphasized the importance of avoiding fuel scooping at accident sites, reminding citizens of the dangers it poses. The explosion is one of the deadliest accidents of its kind in recent years, with many victims still hospitalized.
