NSIB Launches Probe into Fatal Boat Crash Involving Nollywood Stars

The Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has initiated an investigation into a tragic boat accident that occurred five days ago on the Anam River in Anambra State, involving Nollywood actors and crew members. The accident, which involved a speedboat carrying 12 film members and a boat operator, collided with a fishing canoe, resulting in five fatalities. Among the deceased were popular actor Paul Odonwodo (Junior Pope), Abigail Frederick, Precious Oforum, and Joseph Anointing.

Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at NSIB, stated that the bureau's investigators are on site to determine the cause of the accident. The investigation will involve collaboration with the Marine Police Section of the Anambra Police Command, maritime authorities, and industry experts.

Oladeji outlined the scope of the investigation, which includes examining the wreckage of both vessels, interviewing surviving crew members and eyewitnesses, reviewing operational procedures for the commercial speedboat, analyzing weather and environmental conditions, and assessing compliance with safety standards and regulations.

She expressed the bureau's deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims, emphasizing their commitment to conducting a thorough investigation to prevent similar accidents in the future. NSIB will release a preliminary report followed by a final report after the probe, with recommendations aimed at enhancing safety and preventing similar incidents.
