The National Security Adviser to the President, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, expressed concern about the increasing illegal firearms market in the North during a convocation lecture at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. He highlighted the high level of poverty in northern Nigeria, particularly in the North-West region.
Ribadu noted that the illegal arms market in northern Nigeria has experienced a surge in demand and supply, with criminals using sophisticated networks to transport illegal arms across the country. He praised President Bola Tinubu's efforts in combating banditry and terrorism, citing successful operations that freed kidnapped individuals without paying ransom.
Despite the challenges, Ribadu emphasized the President's determination to improve the country's security situation. He highlighted the government's focus on evidence-based strategies and kinetic operations against insurgent groups like Boko Haram. Ribadu also addressed the issue of poverty in the North, citing statistics that show higher poverty rates in northwestern states compared to the national average.
Ribadu mentioned the government's Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to address the underlying causes of insecurity by focusing on security initiatives, socioeconomic development, and inter-communal dialogue. He expressed optimism that these efforts would help alleviate poverty, reduce unemployment, and promote reconciliation in the region.
