Nwabali Apologises to Nigerians After Super Eagles’ World Cup Exit

Nwabali

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has tendered an emotional apology to Nigerians following the team’s painful World Cup playoff defeat to DR Congo, saying the players “gave everything for the badge” in their bid to reach the 2026 World Cup.

Nigeria’s journey ended after a 4–3 penalty shootout loss in the African playoff final, following a 1–1 draw after extra time. Nwabali, who saved two penalties during the shootout, couldn’t rescue the team from costly misses by Calvin Bassey, Moses Simon, and Semi Ajayi.

DR Congo’s captain, Chancel Mbemba, sealed the win with the decisive spot-kick, sending his nation into the intercontinental playoffs and dashing Nigeria’s hopes.

In a heartfelt Instagram post after the match, Nwabali reflected on the disappointment, saying he once stood where the fans stand now—supporting the team with passion. “I know how it feels giving you a disappointing night,” he wrote.

He admitted that the team’s “best wasn’t enough” and assured Nigerians that the players “take full responsibility” for the outcome.
