The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has initiated the enrollment of vulnerable pregnant women in Abuja into the Federal Capital Territory Health Insurance Scheme (FHIS). This initiative aims to provide these women with access to quality healthcare services, including a free safe delivery kit.

During the flag-off ceremony of the enrollment, Mandate Secretary of Health Services and Environment, Dolapo Fasawe, announced that all pregnant enrollees would receive the safe delivery kit at no cost. The Minister of State for FCT, Mariya Mahmoud, praised the government's efforts in making the scheme a reality, ensuring that everyone on the scheme can access healthcare services without financial strain.

Fasawe emphasized the importance of registering for the FHIS, highlighting that health insurance is a key focus of the Nyesom Wike administration. This commitment aligns with President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing the administration’s dedication to ensuring no pregnant woman dies due to childbirth complications.

The initiative covers antenatal care and delivery for pregnant women, aiming to reduce maternal and child morbidity and mortality. Frances Adewumi, the USAID IHP FCT State Director, commended the initiative and pledged continued support to reduce maternal and child mortality in the FCT. Over 1500 pregnant women have already been registered, with 500 receiving safe delivery kits at the event.
